Derouin, R. E., Fritzsche, B. A., & Salas, E. (2004). OPTIMIZING E-LEARNING: RESEARCH-BASED GUIDELINES FOR LEARNER-CONTROLLED TRAINING. Human Resource Management, 43(2/3),

This article explores learner lead course and the relevance of elearning. It lists 16 guidelines the would help in the instructional design phase of developing. There is a comparison of third level students and adult workforce and the motive each group has for learning.

It highlights that elearning is suitable for a diverse geographically spread work force such as that in the Department of Agriculture. It emphasises that elearning and face-to-face learning can be blended for optimum results. If learning is to be learner led than care is needed in the design phase to accurately define what is to be achieved by training delivered.

Learner led learning can improve the learning outcomes and allows learners the opportunity to complete the training at a time and place that suits them.
